What does it mean to be a man today? Social change, cultural shifts, and evolving expectations have reshaped how boys and men understand identity, relationships, work, school and emotional life. This three-part program explores contemporary masculinity through expert insight, cultural analysis, and open dialogue, offering participants multiple perspectives and opportunities for reflection.
Designed for mental health professionals, educators, parents, and anyone interested in understanding the pressures and possibilities facing men and boys today. The series invites thoughtful engagement rather than easy answers.
Part 1: Dr. Sam Robertson launches the series with a lecture examining the historical and current social forces influencing boys and men.
Sam Robertson, M.D., is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst specializing in work with children and adults. Dr. Robertson is a graduate of the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute in Adult Analysis and the Baltimore/Washington Psychoanalytic Institute in Child Analysis. He has taught extensively at both the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute and the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Psychiatry, while maintaining a private practice in child and adult psychiatry.
Norman Finkelstein, Ph.D., poet, critic, editor; Emeritus Professor of English, Xavier University; research graduate, Analytic Training Program, Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute.

Part 2: The Association for Psychoanalytic Thought, will provide a viewing and discussion of the third episode of the series, “Adolescence.”
It is recommended that attendees view the four-part series “Adolescence,” prior to the meeting.

Part 3: The concluding program brings together a panel of speakers with diverse backgrounds, training and viewpoints.
Panelists will offer their perspectives on current issues and challenges to boys and men.
Jennifer Johnson, M.A, LPC, is a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital school-based therapist. She has extensive experience and training utilizing therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. She is also a certified leader for the Strengthening Families Program and is trained in Assessing and Managing Risk for Direct Care Staff Working in Outpatient and Behavioral Health Care Settings.
Eric J. Hollie, MSW, LISW-S, is a Licensed Supervising Independent Social Worker in the state of Ohio. He is the founder, owner & lead therapist for Speak Life Counseling Services, located in the city of Springdale, OH, and has nearly 30 years of social work and therapy experience with various populations.
Carina Behrens, M.D., is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who has completed the Advanced Psychotherapy Program at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Behrens' areas of expertise include mood disorders, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, and ADHD.
Michael Rootman, LISW, is a psychotherapist in private practice specializing in work with families and adolescents. He completed his Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy training at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. Before entering private practice, he spent ten years as a high school teacher and coach.
