Providing Unique Treatment Options

The Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute (CPI) is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to teaching the theory, technique and practice of psychoanalysis. We were founded in 1973 by a group of psychiatrists who received training from the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, were teaching at the University  of Cincinnati’s Department of Psychiatry and wanted to make this intensive training available in the Cincinnati area.

Over the last 35 years, we have developed a rigorous training program that includes classroom study, personal training analysis, and supervised treatment of patients. Although our program remains based on the core principles of psychoanalytic thought, we are a collaborative group of professionals who encourage students to develop their own style and perspective. We learn from our students, while at the same time keeping alive the fundamental approach of psychoanalysis that we believe is essential to successful treatment of mental health issues.

Our program of postgraduate studies is rooted in Sigmund Freud’s early discoveries, but it is constantly evolving. We are always seeking new understanding of the human mind and how it works, exploring ways of treating clients with emotional difficulties in an effort to bring about lasting change. The approaches we teach can be used with both adults and children and complement other mental health approaches and services.

In short, we are committed to creating a community that values the worth and dignity of every person and promotes the exchange of ideas. Our educational programs add treatment options to the arsenal of mental health professionals who seek in their practices to help others live happy and productive lives.
