In this course, we will discuss a number of topics related to the technical and theoretical aspects of psychodynamic treatment with children and adolescents. We will use clinical material from the work of the instructors and the participants to demonstrate the conceptual and practical issues that arise. Specific topics will include the challenges of translating psychodynamic ideas into interventions that deepen the work, the challenges of working with children who neither play nor talk, and the technical challenges of working with adolescent resistances. The focus will be on the discussion of clinical material, and we will also include readings that are relevant to the cases being discussed.

  • Who should attend: Clinicians who work with children and adolescents in agency, hospital, or private practice settings, and who have an interest in learning more about psychodynamic approaches.

Faculty instructors Sydney Anderson, PhD and Brett Clarke, MSW, are faculty members at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. They teach classes in the theory and technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Dr. Anderson and Mr. Clarke are in private practice, and both work with children, adolescents, and adults.
